Lady Tigers no-hit by Newsome

Columbia pitcher Camie Newsome tossed a no-hitter and struck out 12 in a 7-0 win over Wharton Tuesday night at Syndey Johnston Field.
At the plate, she was two for three with two RBIs and a walk.
"She's a very good pitcher," said Wharton coach Shauna Eller of Newsome
Only two Wharton runners reached base in the District 24-3A contest.
Brittany Gutierrez walked with one out in the first but Newsome struck out the next two batters. She walked to lead off the fourth but Newsome retired the next three batters.
The league-leading Lady Necks improved to 8-1 in district play and the fifth place Lady Tigers slipped to 4-5.
"We have to win out for us to have a chance to make the playoffs," said Eller. "We have to get back on track."
Wharton was scheduled to play at 1-8 Stafford Friday night but was postponed because of rain.
It will be played at 5 p.m. Monday at Lady Spartan Field.
Columbia played 6-3 Columbus last night.
Needville entered its game against winless Royal with a 7-2 record and Sweeny had the same record before playing Sealy who was 3-6.
"This district is tough," said Columbia coach Shelly Murphey. "There are a lot of good teams out there and only one game separating a lot of teams."
Columbia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first.
Kiara Bonner led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Kim Garcia.
In the second inning, Kayla Avirett singled but was caught stealing, Kylie Koits was hit by a pitch but the next two batters were retired.
The Lady Necks picked up an unearned run in the third.
Bonner doubled with one out and Garcia reached on an error. Newsome singled home Bonner and Garcia was thrown out at the plate on the play.
Natalie Rodriguez walked but Avirett struck out to end the inning.
Columbia picked up three runs in the fifth to go up 5-0.
Newsome walked with one out and Rodriguez singled. After Avirett reached on a fielder's choice, Kotis followed with a two-run triple. She scored on a single by Ashley Bodenman.
The Lady Necks scored the final two runs in the sixth.
Elayna Burgess reached on an infield and scored on a triple by Bonner. Garcia reached on an infield single and scored on a hit by Newsome.
Wharton pitcher Heather Reynolds started in the circle for the first time this season and pitched into the fifth. Jael Ramirez finished the game.
