Tigers climb back into 24-3A playoff race with 11-1 win

Wharton climbed back in the District 24-3A playoff race after beating Columbia 11-1 in six innings Tuesday night at Tiger Field
Wharton improved to 3-4 district play to end the first round of league action.
and played Stafford, which had Wharton was scheduled to play at Stafford on Friday but the game was postponed because of rain.
It will be made up at 2 p.m. today.
"Every time we win it's going to be bigger and bigger," said Wharton coach Floyd Ciruti. "The next three games are big."
League leading Sweeny beat the Spartans 12-1 to improve to 7-0 and battle 3-4 Sealy last night. The Tigers host the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
Second place Needville beat Sealy 7- 1 to improve to 6-1 and played winless Royal. Columbus beat the Falcons 18-0 and played the 2-5 Roughnecks.
Ciruti said the win over the Roughnecks was a strange game.
"I've been associated with Wharton and Columbia games for years and years," said Ciruti.
"The atmosphere was quiet."
Unlike in Wharton's four loses, the Tigers played great defensively and had only one fielding error.
Kris Looper went the distance for Wharton in Tuesday's game and gave up only one hit.
It came in the top of the first by Zach Whitley. He struck out five and walked five. Looper went four for four at the plate with a double and two RBIs
The Tigers totaled 14 hits in the game, a season high.
J.D. Rivers was two for three with a double and RBI. Chris Acuna was two for two with a double and two RBIs. Brian Cervenka was two for three with two doubles and a RBI.
Wharton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first.
Rivera singled with one out and stole second. Looper doubled and Rivera scored on a wild pitch. Justin Lathon took second as a courtesy runner and stole third. Michael Mata walked and Acuna followed with an RBI double.
Cervenka followed with run-scoring double and Taylor Ustynik walked. Horta then singled home Cervenka.
The Tigers made it 6-0 with a run in the second. Looper doubled and courtesy runner Lathon scored on a single by Mata.
Wharton picked up three more tallies in the fourth to build at 8-0 lead.
Ben Williams led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch with Rivera in the batter's box.
Rivera walked, stole second and went to third on a fielding error. He scored on a double by Looper.
Running for Looper, Lathon went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Acuna.
Cervenka followed with a double. With two out, Mata belted an RBI single.
Columbia scored its lone run in the fifth. Kevin Golightly led off with a walk and crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 11-1.
Lucas Munoz walked and Jesmon Grant took over as a courtesy runner.
David Horta reached on a fielder's choice. Rivera doubled home Grant to make it 10-1 and Looper followed with an RBI single.
Looper retired the side in the top of the sixth as the game ended via run rule.
