It's National Humor Month, take time to be happy with life
Last week we decided to bring together two fine people and their families. Our good friends Dr. Francisco Ortiz and his wife Nelly and P.A. Alberto Ortiz his wife Xiomara and their two children. Both work in Wharton. Dr. Ortiz next to STMC and Al in Convenient Care. Both are well-known and well-liked in Wharton. People always get confused because of their last names although they come from different places. Dr. Ortiz lived in Wharton went to school here and later on his parents moved to Monterrey, Mexico where he finished school. Al is from Puerto Rico and lived in New York. We met at a restaurant in Richmond where we had a nice dinner. We really didn't spend much time talking and plan to get together soon. Nelly Ortiz was a third year medical student when she changed careers in nutrition. She left school to get married and move to Texas. They have been married 8 years and have no children. They live in Richmond and maybe one day they will decide to move to Wharton with his growing practice. Dr. Fred Cessac, District 2S4 Governor of The Lions Club International was in Wharton last week paying a visit to the Wharton Lions. Dr. Cessac gave a good program during the lunch meeting. He is a dentist by profession and comes from La Porte. Billy Cline was back at the meeting in his usual place, he looks well and gave his committee report. Richard Arnold received a certificate of appreciation from Lion President Larry Boyette. Richard sponsored a hole on the 15th annual Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament benefiting the Texas Lions Camp for children with disabilities in Kerrville. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul-Holy Trinity Conference, Wharton group officers includes David Mata, presient; Sharon Villarreal, vice-president; Gary Nunez, treasurer; and Sharon Rochen, secretary. Members are: Daniel and Gloria Garza, Mary Duyka, Kay Kunkel, Rose Anna Korenek, Liz House, Clarice Kutach, Nora Koch, Delores Kocian, Santos and Angel Munoz, Diana Compian, Esequiel Montalvo, Frank Solorzano, Guadalupe Mata, Herlinda Eureste, Josefina Maldonado, Irineo Eureste, Rebecca Aguilar, Dolores Gomez, Sister Ana Lozano and Sister Midory Wu. Spiritual advisors are: Rev. Dominic Antwi-Boasiako and Rev. Bryan Heyer. They meet at Our Lady of Mount Carmen Family Life Center. The church welcomes its newest members: Emmanuel Martinez, Alyssa Cerrillo, McKayla Cerrillo, John Cerrillo, Destiny Resendez, Matthew and Andrew Resendez. They were baptized at the Easter vigil. Bennie and Valeria Hundl, a model couple in our community will be honored by their children and grandchildren on the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass on Sunday, April 27, at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. A dinner will be served at noon with dancing to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wharton. Gregg and Mary Janak celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary this month. It's a baby shower for Jennifer Felix to be held this afternoon at 1 p.m. in Wharton. Jennifer and her husband Chris Felix are expecting a baby boy. Congratulations! Belated birthday wishes to Beverly Sommer, Jackie Carlson and Dorothy Tesar. Today our congratulations go out to Alma Buenger, Paula Torp and Mary Ann Erdelt. Other birthdays this week include: Rosemary Kalina, Annette Linseisen, Lena Quintanilla, Martha Moritz, Nancy Pierce, Lynn Dean, Alec and Alexandria Ogdee, Lambert Stavena, MIchael Klima, George Hinze, Pascual Castro, Craig Gwinner, Haley Garza, Sara and Brandon Freudensprung and Kimberly Hoke. Every year Janice Harris organizes and flies to Washington D.C. with students from Dawson Elementary. This time she didn't make the trip due to health reasons, but Gayla Cullers stepped in and made the cultural trip with students and some of their parents. Valerie and Maggie Cheatham were some of the travelers who had a wonderful and interesting time. The Legionaires and Auxiliaries met last Tuesday for supper and their regular meeting. The spaghetti dinner will be on April 17. They will need a lot of help. Cakes, pies and other goodies will also be welcomed. Melanie Nicole Ivy and Troy Schubach will be united in Holy Matrimony today at St. John's Catholic Church. Congratulations! Next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. the public is invited to a WCJC band concert at the Horton Foote Theatre, Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton Campus. Admission is $4. For information call 532- 6300. Enjoying a nice lunch were a group of friends who always have lots of fun: Pat and Joe Hlavinka, Susie Mathis and Janus Anderson, Dr. Wayne and Sheila Taylor, Billie and Gerald Donaldson. Other birthdays this week are: Marianna Brod, Jeffrey Blair, Haley Socha, Donna Wooten, Rachel Tydlacka, Leland Treybig Jr., Alan Krenek, Dr. John Kieler, Shari Lins, Jana Rachunek, Debbie Lowe, Curtis Ferrell and David Clayton. Having anniversaries this week are special friends Scottie and Norma Jean House, Glenn and Shelly Erdelt, John and Amanda Perches, Everett and Louise Mathis. Larson Wayne Pierce arrived on Feb. 22, at 5:46 p.m. at Memorial Hermann in Katy to Vanessa and Greg Pierce. He weighed 7 lbs., 4 ozs. He is the first baby for the young couple which makes Ronnie and Debbie Wisnieski grandparents for the first time. Nancy Pierce is the maternal grandmother and the late Billy Wayne Pierce. Paternal great-grandmother is Rena Pierce of Sweeny. Debbie and Gene Monroe are getting ready for a wedding. July 5th is the date set for the marriage of Kimberly Monroe and Keith Wittig.
