WCJC diamondmen take series from Laredo LAREDO - WCJC's baseball team took two out of three games from Laredo over the weekend. The Pioneers split Saturday's doubleheader winning the first game 12-8 and dropping the second 10-7. WCJC won Sunday 6-4 and improved to 10-8 in the South Zone of the Region XIV standings. The fourth place Palominos slipped to 7-11. The Pioneers start a threegame series against Galveston today on the coast in a 7 p.m. match up. They'll play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Field. League-leading Alvin swept Galveston to improve to 16-2 and the Whitecaps slipped to 3-15. Second place San Jacinto split Saturday's doubleheader with Blinn, after winning last Wednesday's game to improve to 14-4. The last place Buccaneers slipped to 2-15. The Gators host the Dolphins today. Trey Ross started Saturday's first game and pitched into the sixth. He was relieved by Mike Clark and Kurt Leer also took the mound. WCJC picked up runs in the first and third innings to go up 2-0. Center fielder Billy Hicks singled in the first and scored on a double by first baseman Reno Malay. In the third, shortstop Alex Johnson walked and scored on a single by second baseman Bryan Minzenmeyer. Laredo made it 2-1 in the third and the Pioneers picked up four runs in the fifth to go up 6-1. Johnson, Malay, third baseman Cody Ross and Minzenmeyer reached and scored. Laredo answered with one run in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers added four more runs in the sixth to make it 10-2. Johnson walked and Ross singled. With two out, designated hitter Daniel Meyer walked and Wharton graduate Joel Ansley belted a grand slam. The Palominos answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half to make it 10-5.WCJC picked it's final two runs in the seventh. Johnson walked, Malay singled and scored on a double by Ross. Laredo picked up a run in the seventh to complete the scoring. Jay Reese started the second game and pitched into the fifth. Justin Korenek and Zach Weyland also took the mound. WCJC went up 2-0 in the fourth. Johnson led off with a homer. Ross followed with a single and scored when Meyer reached on an error. Laredo answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-2. The Palominos added three more in the fifth to make it 8-2. WCJC cut the lead to 8-5 with three runs in the sixth. Malay led off with a single and Ross was hit by a pitch. Ansley later drove home Malay with a single and Wharton graduate Jordan Calhoun followed with a run-scoring single. The Palominos went up 10-5 with two runs in the seventh. WCJC mounted a comeback in the ninth to make it 10-7 but came up short. Ansley led off with a homer. Calhoun singled and later scored on a hit by Ben Alainz. In Sunday's game, Jacob Liedka started the game and went eight innings. Rex Garner and Kurt Leer also took the mound. WCJC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Malay singled and Cody Ross homered. The Palominos tied the score in the second. The Pioneers took the lead at 4-2 with two runs in the fifth. Calhoun singled and moved up on an error. Kent then singled. Calhoun scored on a sacrifice bunt by Hicks and Johnson doubled home Kent. WCJC made it 5-2 in the sixth when Minzenmeyer singled and later scored on a double by Calhoun. Johnson homered in the seventh to put the Pioneers up 6-2 and the Palominos picked up two runs in the eight to complete the scoring. Region XIV Standings
