NEWGULF - Boling's baseball team picked up its second biggest win of the season, beating Wharton County rival East Bernard 9-0 Friday night at Bulldog Field.
Boling had downed Wharton 5-1 back on Feb. 26 for the first time.
The Bulldogs had lost to East Bernard 6-5 last month at the Stanley- Krist Tournament in Flatonia last month. But this win counted more since it was a District 27-2A contest.
It was the Bulldogs first league win after losing to Brazos and Van Vleck.
"I expected for us to play hard because the last two games we struggled," said Chad McGee.
"The kids knew that and came out knowing that we had to come out and get things going. We wanted to be aggressive and that's the way we play ball."
Boling was 1-2 before playing 2-0 Danbury last night.
"It puts us right back there in the fight " said McGee.
The Panthers beat Van Vleck 10-0 to improve to 3-0.
The 2-1 Brahmas hosted the Cougars last night and Hitchock and Van Vleck were 1-2 before playing.
EB coach Douglas Grigar credited the Bulldogs for their efforts.
"They came out and played really hard," said Grigar. "In baseball, on any given night anybody can come out and win no matter who you are."
It was the Brahmas third game of the week, beating Van Vleck in a make up game on Monday and beating Hitchcock 6-5 on Tuesday.
"Every night you play is going to be a battle," said Grigar. "Everybody in the district has the capability to beat each other."
They know that this district is wide open as far as the top three playoff spots goes.
"Everybody is knocking off everybody and it will be hard for a team to go undefeated."
McGee singled out the Brahmas for their play.
"They have a good ball club over there and coach Grigar does a good job and they work hard," said McGee.
Only two of Boling's nine runs were earned as the Brahmas committed eight errors. The Bulldogs only had five hits.
Boling pitcher gave Sean Hollis gave up three hits and struck out 10.
"He pitched a real good game," said Grigar of Hollis. "They played real good defense."
Boling jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Hollis reached on an error with one out and was erased at second on a fielder's choice ground ball by Trevor Archer. Tanner Thompson then homered high over the left field fence.
"I think the kids kind of got excited after that," said McGee. "It pumped them up a little bit."
Brahma Aaron Alexander was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the inning but was stranded.
The Bulldogs took advantage of four Brahma miscues to score four runs in the second to go up 6-0.
Justin Henson reached on an error and went to second. He scored on a single by Kris Henson. After Tyler Kulak struck out, Jacob Copeland reached on an error and Kris Henson scored.
Copeland went to second on the play and scored on a single by Justin Hobbs. Hobbs stole second and Hollis struck out. Hobbs made it to third on a wild pitch and scored when Trevor Archer reached on a miscue.
Archer then scored on a ground ball by Tanner Thompson.
Clinton Graves reached on a twoout blooper in shallow center for East Bernard's first hit in the fourth. Hollis got Anthony Cruz to ground out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs made it 7-0 in the fourth when Hobbs reached on an error and scored when a ground ball by Archer was misplayed.
The Bulldogs picked up two more unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-0.
Kris Henson singled and came around to score when a ground ball by Kulak was misplayed. Kulak then scored on a hit by Copeland.
Copeland made it to third but Hobbs flew out to end the inning.
Alexander singled with two outs in the top of the sixth but was stranded.
Archer walked in the bottom of the inning but was stranded.
The Brahmas put up their only threat in the seventh.
Cruz walked and was erased on a fielder's choice ground ball by Luis Roldan. Roldan was then forced out a second on a ground ball by pinch hitter Ricky Simpson.
Jacob Hudman then singled but pinch hitter Cameron Mazoch struck out to end the game.
Coming up Friday, Boling plays at Hitchcock, East Bernard plays at Danbury and Brazos hosts Hitchcock
