Lady Tigers clip Royal; still in 24-3A softball playoff hunt

The pitching was perfect and the hitting nearly so as the Wharton Lady Tigers romped past Royal 16-0 in a game shortened by run-rule to three innings Saturday morning at Sydney Johnston Field .

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved to 4-4 in District 24-3A entering Tuesday night's home game against league leading Columbia, which was 7-1. Wharton is two games behind Sweeny and Needville, both 6-2, in the race for the district's final two playoff spots and one behind Columbus, 5-3, with six games remaining in league play.

With Saturday's win, head coach Shauna Eller expressed confidence her team has turned things around in the district race.

"I think we've still got a chance," she said. "Winning out is possible for us if we play they way I know we can."

Wharton Pitcher Cortni May dominated, striking out six of the nine Royal batters making it to the plate.

The Lady Falcons didn't get a ball out of the infield as May caught one pop up and was helped by a pair of nice catches against the fence in foul territory by first baseman Heather Reynolds.

At the plate, the first six Lady Tigers reached base and scored. Overall the team batted through the order in both innings with 19 of 22 hitters reaching base.

In the first, designated player Jael Ramirez had a RBI double followed by an RBI triple by Reynolds and an RBI single by shortstop Cierra Coleman to highlight a six-run frame.

In the second, Coleman had a tworun, inside-the-park homer to go with a double by right fielder Sharneace Johnson and RBI singles by third baseman Amber Rodriguez and Ramirez. The team scored 10 runs before the frame was finished.

"We were making contact when the pitches were there," Coleman said. "We're still in the playoff race and everyone is trying to do what we can to win each game."

The one flaw on the day was three runners called out for leaving a base early.

But that aggression also benefited the team as catcher Brittany Gutierrez worked a walk-steal try to draw a throw that allowed center fielder Christie Viktorin to scamper home in the first.

"Being aggressive is part of my personality," Gutierrez said. "But it's also a team philosophy on the bases. We're making being aggressive work for us right now."
