Jaquez wins state powerlifting championship

ABILENE - Wharton junior Erich Jaquez made his presence known at Saturday's Division II Texas High School Power Lifting Association State Championships at the Taylor County Expo Center.
Jaquez won the 148-pound class with a 1,405-pound total. He had 525- pound effort in the squat, a 345-pound effort on the bench press and a 535- pound total in the dead lift.
Jaquez had the best bench and deadlift among all the Class 3A schools.
He was the second best lifter in all three divisions and set a state total record.
Wharton senior Chris Owens finished eighth in the Super Heavyweight division with a 1,525-pound total. He had a 640-pound effort in the squat, a 350-pound effort on the bench press and a 535-pound effort on the deadlift.
Lo Barnes from Burkburnet won the event with a 1,765-pound total.
Louise's C.J. Clements competed in the Division III which included Class 2A and 1A schools.
He finished eighth in the 148-pound class with a 1,165 pound total.
El Campo's Mark Dominguea competed in Division I which included Class 4A and 5A schools.
