Cruz sparks Brahmas to 6-5 win over Hitchcock EAST BERNARD - East Bernard relied on the hitting and pitching of Anthony Cruz to take a 6-5 win over Hitchcock in Tuesday's District 27-2A game at Koym Field. Cruz homered deep over the left field fence to lead off the fifth to give the Brahmas the lead. "He got it up in the air and I think the wind helped it out," said EB coach Doug Grigar. He then took the mound in relief of James Powell in the top of the sixth. Cruz walked Matt Cambeno to lead off the sixth inning. He got Sam Johnson and Trey Taylor on fielder's choice ground balls. Morris Tuck then grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, Spencer Newsome lined out to third. Caleb Johnson singled but Cruz struck out Nick Newsome and Bradley Williams to end the game. Powell got the win. "He pitched very courageously," said Grigar. East Bernard, which beat Van Vleck 10-7 in a make up game on Monday, improved to 2-0 in the district standings and Hitchcock slipped to 0-2. "It was good having the second game at home," said Grigar. "It's good to start district at 2-0." The Brahmas played Wharton County rival Boling in Newgulf on Friday. The Bulldogs dropped a 11-5 decision to Van Vleck to fall to 0-2. The Leopard improved to 1-1. "(Boling) will be a big rivalry game so we can enjoy this game until midnight," said Grigar. Danbury beat Brazos 9-2 to improved to 2-0 and Brazos slipped to 1-1. In the first the Brahma defense stopped the Dogs from scoring when Morris Tuck laced a two-out double with Sam Johnson trying to score from first, however Luis Roldan threw a great relay to Clint Graves who gunned Johnson down at the plate. The Brahmas scored in the first when Matt Stelzel reached on a one-out single and scored on Aaron Alexander's double. In the second Luis Roldan led off with a walk, Cameron Orsak followed with a single, and both moved around on wild pitches. Roldan scored on the second of two wild pitches. Orsak later scored on Chris Plunkett's sacrifice fly. After Hitchcock scored two runs to close the gap, Alexander led off the third with a solo home run. After the Bulldogs scored three to take the lead in the fourth, the Brahmas answered when Plunkett reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a walk to Zach Rivera. Both runners moved up on a catching error. Plunkett then scored on a wild pitch. Coming up Tuesday, East Bernard hosts rival Brazos, Danbury plays Boling in Newgulf and Van Vleck hosts Hitchcock. 27-2A Standings
