Lady Tigers snap 3-game skid
Wharton softballers host Royal this morning

Wharton's softball team snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Sealy 8-2 Tuesday night at Sydney- Johnston Field

The Lady Tigers last win was over Stafford and came on March 11. The Lady Tigers then lost to Sweeny, Columbus and Needville.

Tuesday's win marked the final first round game of District 24-3A play.

The now 3-4 Lady Tigers host winless Royal in a 10 a.m. game on Saturday.

"We're in a must win situation the rest of the way," said Wharton coach Shauna Eller referring to her team's playoff chances.

Columbia beat Sweeny 10-2 to improve to 6-1 and the Lady Bulldogs slipped to 5-2. Needville bested Columbus 2-0 to improved to 6-1 and the Lady Cardinals slipped to 4-3. Sealy slipped to 3-4 and hosts Columbus today.

Sweeny plays at Needville in a big game and Stafford visits Columbia.

Wharton batters totaled 12 hits in the game and only one struck out.

"We've had multiple strike outs in previous games but we hit the ball well," said Eller.

Jael Ramirez went the distance in the circle, giving up five hits while striking out nine.

Sealy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and Wharton answered with three in the bottom of the inning.

Christie Viktorin led off with a single and stole second. She went to third on a hit by Brittany Gutierrez. Jael Ramirez followed with a two-run double and went to third on a single by Heather Reynolds.

Reynolds stole second before Chandra Johnson singled home Ramirez.

The Lady Tigers from Wharton County picked up three more runs in the second.

Viktorin reached on a one-out bunt single and went to second when a ground ball by Gutierrez was misplayed. Ramirez followed with a tworun double.

Judith Sanchez took second as a courtesy runner and scored on a hit by Paige Mata.

Wharton made it 7-1 in the third. Chandra Johnson doubled and went to third on a fielder's choice ground ball by Sharneace Johnson.

Megan Drenner then followed with an RBI single.

Wharton picked up its final run in the fourth. Reynolds singled and went to third on a hit by Mata. They moved up on a ground ball by Mardi Gutierrez. Reynolds then scored on a hit by Chandra Johnson.

Sealy picked up its final run in the sixth to bring the score to 8-2.

Ramirez was three for four with a double and four RBIs. Chandra Johnson was three for three; Ramirez was three for four; Reynolds was two for three and Mata was two for four.

Coming up Tuesday, Wharton hosts Columbia, Sweeny plays at Stafford, Sealy hosts Royal and Columbus entertains Stafford.

Wharton's junior varsity beat Sealy 11-3.
