Gerald Smith
Gerald Charles Smith passed away March 22, 2008 after a determined battle with cancer. Mr. Smith was born on Jan. 14, 1936 in Detroit, Mich., to Maude Sibley Haycock Smith and Fred Charles Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard F. Smith.

After several moves following his father's army career, including living in Germany after World War II, he graduated from Bismarck High School in North Dakota. Mr. Smith earned his MBA from Michigan State and served in the National Guard. After retiring from Conoco, he worked as a computer consultant.

An Astros and Aeros fan, "Hey, Hey", he also enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. Mr. Smith loved driving tractors and spending time at the Smith Tree Farm. He volunteered for Memorial Area Ministries and Ground Angels and was a member of the Republican Party.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lynda Rae Hughes Smith; sisters, Susan Smith of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Linda Bostian and husband Carrel of Katy, and children Sheryl Ganske and husband, Melvin of Boling, Laurie Anne Smith and companion Jimmy Dinan of Katy, Stuart Charles Smith and wife Michelle of Garland. He is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Jeffery Christopher Mudd, Lauren Rae Seiler, Matthew James Henke, Sierra Mae Ganske, Spencer Charles Smith and Campbell Michelle Smith along with his loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton on March 25, 2008 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society or Lance Armstrong Foundation.
