Commissioners to hold own auction
By BARRY HALVORSON bhalvorson@journal-spectator.com

Trying to eliminate the extra expense, the Wharton County Commissioners approved doing their own auctioning of surplus vehicles and motorized equipment during Monday's regular meeting.

The item to approve going to an online auction service to sell several pieces of equipment was placed on the agenda by Precinct 2 Commissioner Chris King. But when time came to discuss it, King offered an alternative.

"I have some trucks I need to move so I can use the proceeds toward purchasing a new dump bed," King said.

"I was looking at doing it online but the best price I could find was 8 percent.

"We're trying to save money so why lose 8 percent when we can conduct the sale ourselves," King added.

The commissioners voted to conduct the auction, setting a tentative date of April 19 starting at 10 a.m. at the Precinct 4 Barn.

On the recommendation of Precinct 3 Commissioner Philip Miller, the court is limiting the sale to only vehicles and other rolling stock and each of the commissioners have been invited to include their precinct's surplus vehicles to the auction with the understanding the fi- nal sale list would be approved at their April 14 meeting.

King said the surplus vehicles he planned to auction include two pickups, a mechanics truck, a 12-yard dump and a 6- yard dump.

In another item, Precinct 4 Commissioner Jimmy Kainer got approval to purchase two new shredders.

Kainer said they would be paid for out of budgeted funds.
