Spring is time of new beginnings such as births and weddings
The beginning of a new life for a beautiful young couple began last Saturday when Christy Marie Lay became the bride of Robin Lee Stoddard Jr. One of the wedding's soloist, Julia Battle, is a trained opera singer who teaches with Christy. She is also a transplant from Hurricane Katrina. The reception was held at the Wharton Community Civic Center which was completely transformed with silk, tall silver candelabras, fresh baby pink roses, tealight candles and dinner served on china. Dinner was served buffet style. The groom's cake was German chocolate, hers was an old-fashioned creme cake with buttercreme icing. Regina and Bruce Hanz of Blanco, friends of the groom, were sitting at my right. She is a second grade teacher. We had a very interesting conversation about politics in Latin America. One of my favorite subjects. A great number of guests were from out of town from cities around San Antonio. Others sitting at the table were Mickey and Vicki Reynolds, Peggy Watkins, Herschel and Cathy Cain, J.B. and me. I tried to cover most of the tables where I knew people. Enjoyed time with Rosemary Hinze and Lydia Kubicek. Lydia's daughter is getting married soon. Others sitting close by were Liz Richardson, Gary and Gay Joines, their daughter Marci Macha and husband Allan Macha and grandma Barbara Sommers. Malachia Benich and husband Tim Benich of Louise were there. I hadn't seen and spoken to her in many years. She looks great. Her daughter Chelsea is an accountant and soon to be a CPA. She works for Price Waterhouse. Dr. Keith and Bessie Schulze and their two beautiful daughters were there, his parents are Art and Sharon Schulze. His office is now in Sugar Land. There was Nora and Mike Koch, their son Brian Koch, daughters Laurie Koch and Amy Stewart and her three boys. Pretty Rachel Ondrias was dancing with little Molly Ondrias. Also there were Judy and Harold Shilk, Gavin Ondrias, Theresa Guess, De- Voy and Jean Shaw, Sheila and Wayne Taylor, Gary and Janice Gensler and Tommy Chapman. Later on we sat with Joan Andel, Debbie Fitzgerald, Rebecca Crabb and Patsy Valenta, Dr. Marc and Tammy Sangalli, Glenda Bozalina, Bob and Jan Stokes. Also there were Dale and Pat Sikora, Pat Wilson, Betty Zahradnik, Jonica Kielman and Morgan, Mary Zahradnik, Erin Sikora, Darryl Andel, Lupe Mata, Tencha Compian and Mary Alice Mata. We enjoyed the dance. Christy and Robbie plan to take a delayed honeymoon trip. They are residing in the New Braunfels area. Nikole Hubenak and Chris Sliva will be united on March 29 at the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. She daughter of Robert and Pam Hubenak of Wharton. Chris is the son of Michael and Susan Sliva of East Bernard. Burt and Fern Koons celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Congratulations. They plan to make their home in Wharton. Margaret Tyler is nursing a fractured arm from a ski accident while they were in Colorado. She and husband Richard Tyler, one of their grandsons and Linda Johns were on the trip. Wharton Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture celebrated with their 89th annual banquet honoring a fine couple, Joe and Merle Hudgins. Glenn Erdelt was emcee. Ann Gooden was also recognized as past board chairman, she was absent enjoying a Caribbean cruise with husband Jim Gooden. New chairman is Cheryl Roach. Ron Sanders made his debut as new chamber executive director and he passed with flying colors. June Jansky is the outgoing office manager we all are going to miss. The outgoing board members are Sybil Inman, Mack Mathis and Tod Mund. We enjoyed talking with Mary Lou Krenek, Cindy and Trey Maffett, Susie Jackson and Larry who came from La Grange where they are very happy in their new city. We had a very nice and lively group at our table with Rhonda and Brian Bremser, John and Therese Roades, Ana and Brad Macha, Elizabeth Roades, Lynn Cook of Hallettsville and J.B. and me. Our dear friend Wharton pediatrician Dr. Gregg Dimmick has finished editing his second historical book. Filisola's Analysis is the second important work produced by Dr. Dimmick. Earlier he tracked the retreating Mexican army in his first book Sea of Mud. Dr. Dimmick continues giving us big surprises with his many talents. Beautiful mother-to-be Salina Locke and husband John Coleman Locke will be honored with a baby shower at the home of Harry and Sarah Goudeau in Hungerford. Proud grandparents to be for the fourth time are Regina and Coleman Locke. Thank you to Marie and Hartzell, Sherrell and Sandra, Luke and Paul Jones for taking time for the elderly every Monday morning. We appreciate each one of you for your love. Alicia and Jerry Rodriguez are happy to have their dog Katie back home. The Rodriguez's two pets disappeared from their home.
