Texas Tech University releases dance hall book
Book Review Mike Konvicka

Texas Dance Halls are continuing to draw attention and yet another book is out to promote them.

"Texas Dance Halls - A Two- Step Circuit" was released last month by the Texas Tech University Press.

The 192-page hard cover book, written by Gail Folkins, includes stories and black and white photos by Marcus Weekley from dance halls in South Texas.

The stories capture the essence of inspecting these historic places.

It's just as interesting as "Pat Green's Dance Halls And Dreamers" and "Dance Halls And Last Calls."

Featured are dance halls in Swiss Alp, Dubina, London, Round Up In La Grange, Coupland, the Broken Spoke in Austin, Uhland Saengerrunde Hall, Twin Sisters, Star Hall, Freyburg and Gruene in New Braunfels, Sefcik and Luckenbach.

There's also a feature of the Tejano band Little Joe Y La Famila playing a gig at Indian Springs Park.

The Round Up Hall includes information about Sunday lunch, dancing and boozing.

The Broken Spoke features dancing in one of the oldest honky tonks in the state.

Swiss Alp, which is an open air hall, features folks waiting for an upcoming dance.
