Texas Highways features Wharton The communities of Wharton and El Campo are featured in the April issue of Texas Highways magazine, which hit the shelves on Thursday. A feature story on Greek Bros. Saloon in El Campo is included with pictures on Page 21.When you turn the next page, you'll see a double truck picture of Wharton fiddler and humorist Doc Blakely playing his fiddle in front of the Wharton County Courthouse. The opening paragraph says that Wharton is a town of character and a lot of characters. The following pages include comments on such area notables as Jeffrey Blair, David Bucek and Billie Jones. Additional pictures include one of kids enjoying an arcade game in the 20th Century Technology Museum, county maintenance supervisor Paul Shannon winding the courthouse clock, cars driving by the neon-lit Plaza Theatre at night and a picture and story on the Tee Pee Motel. Local businesses mentioned include Pat A Cake on the square and other downtown Wharton merchants. Last but not least is a short story on Horton Foote. Also included in this issue are pictures and stories on the bluebonnets and wildflowers around the state. There's also a feature with pictures on vintage baseball players, an annual event at George Ranch outside of Richmond. |
