BROOKSHIRE - Wharton's softball team needed only an hour and three innings to beat Royal 16-0 on a cold and windy Monday afternoon in the District 24-3A opener.

"We played real well and it was real windy," said Wharton coach Shauna Eller. "They only had two sets of lights and we were trying to get it finished."

The Lady Tigers improved to 5-4 on the season.

Freshman Cortni May went the distance in the circle and gave up no hits. She struck out eight.

Wharton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.

Judith Sanchez singled with one out and made it to third on two passed balls.

Heather Reynolds walked and Sanchez scored on a passed ball. Brittany Gutierrez

later walked and stole second. Chandra Johnson followed with a tworun

double. Johnson later scored on a passed ball.

The Lady Tigers erupted for 10 runs in the second go up 14-0.

Christie Viktorin and Coleman had RBI singles, Sharneace Johnson had a RBI triple, Jael Ramirez had a threerun double and a RBI triple. Guttierez had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Gutierrez and Johnson had back-toback home runs in the top of the third to make it 16-0.

The game ended in the bottom of the inning after Royal failed to pick up at least six runs via the mercy rule.

Sweeny beat Needville 6- 4 in the only other district game. Stafford's game with Columbia and Sealy's game with Columbus was postponed because of rain.

They were made up on Tuesday. Wharton visits Columbia on Friday and entertains Stafford next Tuesday.
