Lady Tigers notch 2-1 victory over Bay City
District 24-3A play starts Monday

BAY CITY - Wharton's softball team held off a seventh inning rally to beat Bay City 2-1 Tuesday night.

The Lady Tigers improved to 3-2 on the season and played two games at the LCISD Tournament in Rosenberg on Thursday.

"It was a very tight game all the way through," said Wharton coach Shauna Eller.

"We didn't have any others and played good."

Wharton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Christie Viktorin led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Paige Mata. Brittany Gutierrez then singled home Viktorin

The Lady Tigers made it 2-0 with a run in the fifth.

Meagan Drenner led off with a single and stole second. Reynolds then walked with two ours and Gutierrez followed with an RBI single.

Bay City then picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh but pitcher Jael Ramierz got out of the jam.

She went the distance in the circle. She yielded three hits and struck out nine.

Mardi Gutierrez singled in the sixth but was stranded for Wharton's only other hit.

Wharton starts playing for keeps Monday when they travel to Brookshire to play Royal at 5 p.m. in the District 24-3A opener.

Sweeny hosts Needville, Sealy plays at Columbus and Stafford hosts Columbia in the other three district games.
