Wharton snaps 4-game losing steak

Wharton snapped a four-game losing streak by claiming a 10-2 run-rule win over Cypress Springs Thursday night in the 49th Annual Wharton Invitational Baseball Tournament.

After beating Houston Waltrip in the season opener on Feb. 9, the Tigers lost three games in the Houston Christian tournament last week and dropped a 4-1 decision to county rival Boling this past Tuesday.

In other tournament games on Thursday, Bellville beat El Campo 2-1 and Jersey Village beat Bay City 5-4 in a 10 innings

Coming up today, El Campo plays Jersey Village at noon, Cy Springs plays Bay City at 3 p.m. and the Tigers play the Bellville at 6 p.m.

On Friday, Bellville played Jersey Village, Cypress Springs played El Campo and Wharton played Bay City .

The Tigers erupted for five runs in the third inning to break a scoreless tie.

David Horta singled with one out and scored on a triple by J.D. Rivera.

After Justin Lathon walked. Kris Looper reached on an error and Rivera came around to score.

A fly ball by Mata was mishandled in left field and Lathon and Looper scored. Mata then scored on a ground ball by Chris Acuna.

The Tigers added five more runs in the fourth to go up 10-0.

Taylor Ustynik walked and Munoz singled down the left field line. After Horta popped up to shallow center field, Ustynik scored on a infield single by Rivera.

Lathon then singled home Munoz to make it 7-0. Rivera scored on a ground ball by Looper and Mata followed with a two-run single.

Cy Springs threatened to prolong the game by scoring two runs in the bottom half

T.J. Boyd reached on an error and made it to third on a double by Dalton Blonk. Chris Segura followed with a two run single and Hunter Arteyr grounded out to end the game.

Looper went the distance on the mound and scattered four hits, striking out four.
