Tigers go 0-3 in HC baseball tournament HOUSTON - Fielding errors proved costly for Wharton's baseball team in the Houston Christian Tournament completed on Saturday night. Wharton dropped a 6-1 decision to Beaumont Westbrook in a game played Thursday at Tiger Field. On Saturday, Wharton dropped a 12-2 decision to Barber, La. and lost to host Houston Christian 4-0 later in the day. "They were all solid ball clubs but we didn't play defense very well," said Wharton coach Floyd Ciruti. "We're making the catch but not making the throws. It's more mechanical than anything. We're pressing when we get the ball or squeezing it too much." However Ciruti praised his players for their work. "The efforts have been good and the kids are playing as hard as they can play." In the Thursday loss, Westbrook scored three in the first and two in the sixth to go up 5-0. Wharton scored it's lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Ben Williams singled, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. He scored on a single by Cody Boatright. Forest Brook made it 6-1 with a run in the seventh. Tiger Chris Acuna had a doubled in the bottom of the inning but was stranded. David Horta singled in the third and Brian Cervenka had a base hit in the fourth. Taylor Ustynik started for Wharton and Robert Herrea finished the game. In the 12-2 loss, Barber scored two in the first and Wharton answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. J.D. Rivera singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Barber picked up another run in the second and four more in the fourth to go up 7-1. The Tigers answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Mata doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Kris Looper. Barber exploded for five runs in the sixth to pull away. Mata started the game and pitched into the second. Robert Herrera finished the game. In the loss to Houston Christian, Wharton fell behind 1-0 after the first inning and the Mustangs picked up three more in the third. Looper started the game and went four innings. Boatwright finished the game. Rivera singled in the sixth and Looper had a base hit in the seventh. Wharton entered Tuesday's home game against county rival Boling with a 1-3 record. The Bulldogs were 0-2. The 49th Annual Wharton Invitational Tournament cranks up on Thursday. El Campo plays Bellville at 1 p.m. Bay City plays Jersey Village at 4 p.m. and Wharton plays Cypress Springs at 7 p.m. On Friday, Bellville plays Jersey Village at 1 p.m. El Campo plays Cy Springs at 4 p.m. and Wharton plays Bay City at 7 p.m. On Saturday, El Campo plays Jersey Village at noon. Bay City takes on Cy Fair at 3 p.m. and the Tigers play Bellville at 6 p.m. |
