Black History program held at B&G Club
Guest speaker was Capt. Richard Coleman. After Coleman spoke, Rev. Matthews performed a solo and Robert Baylor from Progressive Baptist Church in El Campo did a praise dance. Other performances were done by the Boys and Girls Club Cheerleaders, the Richardson family and youth from East Gate New Prosperity Church spoke on Black History. Closing was given by Barbie Fortenberry. Recognition during Black History month is due to Katie Hatton of Spanish Camp. She was born in 1877 and lived to the age of 114. The story of her life is on display at the Wharton County Historical Museum. This display includes histories of the Coleman, Meyers, Robertson and Speaker families. Members of Mount Gilead Baptist Church had a Black History program on Sunday. Welcome was given by Frankie Jackson. Destiny Gordon and Joyce Speaker used Harriet Tubman as a topic for their presentations program. Bertha Edwards spoke on the purpose of the event. Briana Jenkins spoke about Shirley Chisholm and Kaylin Ray spoke on Thurgood Marshall. Chantell Chachere spoke about Mary Bethune and Cassandra Phoenix spoke on George Washington Carver. Leroy Sanford spoke on Carter Woodson. A tribute to Sojourner Truth was given by Lorressia Jenkins and Fredrick Douglass was spoken about by Rose Hall. After the sermon Caleb Murray sang a solo. A soul food dinner was served after the program. Happy birthday wishes go out today to Madison Cline, Dennis Haller, Wilfred Hubenak, Mike Wootton and Hollis Yackel. Other birthdays celebrated this week include Cynthia Bankston, Jestin Cooper and Joe Rhodes on Feb. 28; Gladys Coleman on Feb. 29; Ernest Chudalla, Morgan Hines and Milton Simmons on March 1; Twalla Garcia, Wade Mathis, Joshua Mendoza, Roy Sparks and Ruiel Taylor Jr. on March 2; Stacy Carlson, Diana Honc, Elisha Koenig, Kacy Machann and Javarra Williams on March 3; and Gregory Hood, Luke Joines, Stephanie Rachunek, Whitney Rachunek and Leslie Zahn on March 4. These happy birthday wishes come with lots of love from family members and friends. Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Gary and Carol Koenig of Wharton who will be celebrating 49 years of marriage under the sapphire, both traditional and modern, wedding symbol on March 1 from relatives and friends. Sympathy with prayers are expressed to the Jackson family who lost their loved one Pearline Jackson of Wharton on Feb. 13. Sympathy with prayers are expressed to the Sabrsula family who lost their loved one Paul Sabrsula of Simonton on Feb. 16. Get well wishes and prayers are sent to Cotney "C.J." Randle of Wharton from family members and friends. A second meeting to organize a Jake Ford Community Reunion will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at New Zion Bethel Baptist Church. The Twentieth Century District Youth Choir Musical will be held at 7 p.m. March 1 at Camp Zion/Rising Star United Baptist Church in Spanish Camp. A Men's Day Program will be held at 3 p.m. March 2 at White Cloud Baptist Church in Eagle Lake. The holy word will be preached by Rev. K. Wicks of New Home Baptist Church in Garwood. A Women in Color Musical will be held at 6 p.m. March 8 at New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Mackey. Special guests will be the Voices of the Mainland of Texas City.
