Taylor, Dogins earn top 24-3A cage honors

Wharton girls basketball players Vernequa Taylor and Shaniqua Dogins were part of the Lady Tigers success in winning the District 24-3A championship.

They have since received individual honors on the All-District 24-3A basketball team which was selected earlier in the month at Wharton High School.

Taylor, a junior, was selected the Offensive Most Valuable Player.

She totaled 265 points in 14 district games for a 19.9 average. Taylor also totaled 79 assists for a 5.6 average.

Dogins was selected the Newcomerof the Year. She scored 200 points for a 14.3 average. She also pulled down 176 rebounds for a 12.5 average.

Sweeny's Ashley Bonner was selected the Defensive Most Valuable Player.

Wharton junior Jalessa Jones earned first team honors and scored 196 points for a 14 point average. She also pulled down 176 rebounds for a 7.1 average.

Other first team selections included Jessica Jammer and Amber Busby from Royal, Laura Whitehead from Columbia, Elise Husky from Columbus, Ashley Jacks from Needville, Temple Taylor from Sealy, Connie Espinas from Stafford and Christacia Holmes from Sweeny.

Wharton juniors Chandra Johnson and Desurae Matthews were selected to the second team.

Johnson totaled 142 points for a 10 point average and pulled down 101 rebounds for 7.2 average.

Other second teamers included Brittney Krchnak and Patrice Clark from Sealy, Adrienne Thomas and Charnicia Marae from Stafford, Kayla Boone from Royal, Kiara Bonner from Columbia and Brandy Husky and Mandy Moeller from Columbus.

Wharton junior Latoy Lavan received honorable mention honors.

Wharton's All-Academic selections are freshman Brionna Farr, Dogins and Matthews.
