Tiger lifters finish third in Rice meet
Owens, Jaquez earn bring home gold medals

ALTAIR - Wharton's boys powerlifting team finished third among 30 teams at Saturday's Rice Consolidated Invitational held in Raider Gym.
LaVernia lifters totaled 27 points to win the team championship. Columbus was second with 18 points and the Tigers finished with 16.
El Campo was 14th with six points. East Bernard tied with Luling and Blooming for 15th with six points. Boling also fielded a team in the competition.
For Wharton, Chris Owens won the superheavy weight class with a 1,490 pound total.
Erich Jaquez won the 148-pound class with a 1,375 pound total and Jonathan Wells finished fourth in the 132- pound class with a 940 pound total.
For Boling, Dustin Ortiz and Brandon Krushall tied for 25th with a 755 pound totals. Jarayl Spears was 26th with a 690 pound total and Dupree Taylor was 27th with a 675 pound total
Dennis Hemphill finished 15th in the 148-pound class with a 805 pound total. Cody Atkinson finished 25th in the 181-pound class with a 470 pound total
For East Bernard, Gabe Segrest finished second in the 181-pound class with a 1,195 pound total.
Austin Matura finished ninth in the 165-pound class with a 658 pound total.
Adam Kubena finished 12th in the 242-pound class with a 1,000 pound total.
Danny Machado finished 14th in the 220-pound class with a 1,005-pound total. Louie Limas finished 23rd in the 148-pound class with a 665 pound total.
In the girls division, Wharton's Quiera Ragston finished fifth in the 181- pound class with a 430 pound total.
Shea Flynn finished 11th in the 132- pound class with a 383 pound total.
For Boling, Caprice Lorenzen finished 11th in the 114-pound class with a 435 pound total. Dollie Petrosky and Kassie Nash also competed but didn't place.
For East Bernard, Myrna Olvera finished sixth in the 181-pound class with a 575 pound total.
Other team finishes included Hallettsville and Tidehaven tied for fourth with 14 points. Smithville was sixth with 13 points, Caldwell was seventh with 11 points and Bastrop was eighth with 10 points.
Sealy and Caldwell tied for ninth with nine points. Host Rice finished with eight points. Hempstead and Louise totaled up seven points each.
Brazos, Stafford, Schulenburg, Ganado, Gonzales, Bastrop, Weimar, Bay City, San Marcos, Tomball and Edna also competed in the meet.
