Wharton spring tennis season under way Wharton's tennis team spring season is under way. Wharton dropped 13 of 18 matches to Foster on Jan. 17 but bounced back to dominate Alief Elsik 15-0 and Alief Taylor 17-1 on Jan. 19. On Jan. 28,. Wharton took 12 of 13 matches from Calhoun. In their most recent outing, Wharton competed in the Fort Bend Tournament on Feb. 8. "We started off our season with a loss and that woke up the kids," said long-time Wharton tennis coach Roben Eller. In A girls singles matches Kim Janik won her first match 2-6, 6-0 (10-8) and lost her second 6-3, 6-2. In A boys singles, Sylvester Mayfield lost his first match 6-3, 6-3; won his second 6-3, 6-0; and lost his third 6-2, 6-2. The A girls doubles team of Ashley Aaron and Christie Viktorin took the consolation bracket title. After losing to a team from Seven Lakes 7-6, 6-3; the pair beat a team from Westside 6-4, 6- 3; beat a team from El Campo 6-2, 6-3; and beat a team from Atascosita 6-3, 6- 0 for the title. The A boys doubles team of Rick Doetsch and Ryan McMicken beat a team from Willowridge 6-2, 6-0 and lost to a team from Dulles 6-7, 7-5 (10-8). The A mixed double team of Calvin Boehm and Rachel Gubbels lost a first round match to a team from Westside 6-3, 6-2. The rallied to beat a team from Clear Brook 6-3, 6-0 ; beat team from Atascosita 6-3, 6-0 and beat at team from Pasadena Memorial 6-2, 6-2 to take the consolation championship. In girls B singles, Paige Mata won her first match 6-0, 6-1 and lost her second 6-4, 1-6 (10-5). In boys B singles, Chris Feyen lost his first match 5-7, 6-4 (10-7) and then dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision. The B girls doubles team of Jessica Kainer and Paige Bahnsen won their first match 6-4, 6-2 and lost their second match 6-1, 3-6 (10-6) The B boys doubles team of Patrick Tuley and Manesh Perea won their first match 6-1, 6-3; won their second match 7-5, 6-4 before dropping their third 6-0, 7-5. The mixed doubles team of Kole Kubicek and Rachel Kocian won their first match 6-3, 6-3, won their second match 3-6, 7-5 (10-1) and lost their third match 6-1, 6-3. "The competition was tough, but I thought we played better this week," Eller said. "We played good competition and that is going to make us better. We just want to get better each week of our season." Wharton's junior varsity team played in the Sweeny Invitational Tournament last weekend. Bahnsen won girls singles and Magen Lesak was second. Johnny Castro was third in boys singles. The girls doubles team of Sarah Gubbels and Gina Wuthrich took first and Kendall Watson and Amanda Billings was second. The boys doubles team of Chip Doetsch and Jake Jarvela took first. The mixed doubles team of Nick Lanza and Lindle Pennington took first and Taylor Cline and Elizabeth Masek was second. Wharton is playing in the Angleton Tournament today and competes in the Foster Tournament next weekend. |
