Wharton's Kenneth Phynon's missed shot at the buzzer left Royal with a 52- 51win Tuesday night at Tiger Gym to give the visitors the third and final District 24-3A playoff spot.

Both teams finished with identical 8-6 records but Royal swept the headto head meetings after beating the Tigers 47-40 in their first meeting on Jan. 18 in Brookshire.

Wharton had a two-game lead over Royal last week but the Tigers lost to Sweeny last Friday and the Falcons prevailed over Sealy to set up the Tuesday showdown.

"It's unbelievable," said Royal coach Eric Cormier. "As a coach, it's my first time to make the playoffs.

"I said when I took my job that it would take three years to get there."

The Falcons will now play Bellville, the 23-3A runner-up, Tuesday in a bidistrict game in Sealy.

Royal's Erick Matthew hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds to give the Falcons their one-point lead.

Wharton's Jordan Kirschke missed a 3-point shot on the other end with 12 seconds left. A Royal player was fouled with 10 seconds left but it was Wharton's fifth of the second half so the team got the ball out-of-bounds rather than going to the free throw line. Wharton then committed it's sixth foul with 9 seconds left.

Royal's Josh Glover was fouled with 7.13 seconds left which put the visitors in the bonus. Glover missed the front end of the one-and-one opportunity and Wharton rebounded the ball and called time out. Phynon then missed the shot before the buzzer sounded.

The Tigers took a 15-14 lead after the first quarter and went up 30-28 at halftime.

Royal went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter and took a 35-30 lead.

Phynon hit a 3-pointer with 5:21 remaining to make it 35-32. The Falcons then went up 37-34 after a basket by Mikey Lang with 4:34 showing on the clock.

Wharton came back to tie the score a minute later and then Thompson gave the Tigers a 39-37 lead with 1:38 remaining. Tiger Julian Waddy connected with nine seconds left to put the Tigers up 41-37.

But Glover hit a trey before the horn sounded to make it 41-40.

Wharton came back in the fourth quarter and went up 48-45 with 3:21 remaining after Jonavon Jones hit two free throws.

Royal's Reginald Brandyberg cut the margin to one with 2:23 showing on the clock.

Odis Thompson was fouled with 1:37 remaining and hit one of two free throws for a 49-47 Tiger lead.

Matthew tied the game with 1:16 remaining. Waddy then hit a hoop to put Wharton up 51-49 in the game with 55 seconds to set up the finish.

Free throw shooting almost proved costly for the Falcons who were nine of 17 from the charity stripe. Wharton was seven of 10.

Thompson led the Tigers with 16 points. Phynon finished with 11.

Kirschke, Keemon Jones and Jonavan Jones scored six each. Waddy added four and Doug Ford had a field goal. Matthew led the Falcons with 13 points. Brandburg and Glover scored 12 each. Gadrian Moses added eight and Mikey Lang scored seven.

Sweeny beat Needville 72-67 and Stafford bested Columbia.

The Spartans and Bulldogs battled for playoff seedlings Friday night at Foster High School in Rosenberg.

Needville finished fifth with a 6-8 record, Sealy was sixth at 4-10, Columbus was seventh at 3-11 and Columbia
