Tigers miss out on playoffs
Royal holds on for 52-51 victory

      Wharton's Kenneth Phynon's missed shot at the buzzer left Royal with a 52- 51win Tuesday night at Tiger Gym to give the visitors the third and final District 24-3A playoff spot. WCJC diamond men swept by Temple
Pioneers host Angelina next Wednesday
      WCJC's baseball team slipped to 8-5 on the season after dropping a doubleheader to Temple College Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field. The games were originally scheduled for Wednesday but postponed because of wet grounds. Temple won the first game 4-0 and the second 3-2.

Lady Tigers try to advance in 3A playoffs
      DEER PARK - Wharton's girls basketball team needed a win over Hardin- Jefferson Friday night to advance to the Class 3A Region III quarterfinals. Hardin-Jefferson beat Coldsprings 70-35 in a bi-district game on Tuesday to set up last night's area round contest.

Wharton spring tennis season under way
      Wharton's tennis team spring season is under way. Wharton dropped 13 of 18 matches to Foster on Jan. 17 but bounced back to dominate Alief Elsik 15-0 and Alief Taylor 17-1 on Jan. 19. On Jan. 28,. Wharton took 12 of 13 matches from Calhoun.

High school baseball season starts Monday

      Wharton, Boling, and East Bernard's baseball teams all made the playoffs last season. And the Tigers, Bulldogs and Brahmas will try to repeat as they crank up their respective seasons next week. The Brahmas play Sweeny in a 7:30 p.m. game Monday at Outlar-Bennett Field.

Wharton Babe Ruth turns 50 years old
      Wharton Babe Ruth League celebrates it's 50th season of existence this year. The local league has had one 13-15 year old team, one 16 year old team and two 16-18 year old team appearances in Babe Ruth World Series over the years and numerous appearances in regional tournaments.

      EAST BERNARD - East Bernard's boys basketball team closed out its season with a 77- 74 win over Can Academy Tuesday night in Brahma Gym.
