Former resident victim of knife wounds to neck
By BARRY HALVORSON bhalvorson@journal-spectator.com

A former Wharton resident visiting the city found himself being transported by ambulance to the Gulf Coast Medical Center Thursday evening after having been cut with a knife.

Wharton Police Detective Sgt. Ben Evans identified the victim as Sammy Ferrell, 46, now a resident of Big Spring. Ferrell was initially treated at the local hospital and then transferred to a Houston area medical facility where he received additional treatment and was released. None of the wounds were reported as being life threatening.

A report of the incident states the victim was socializing with two men at the rear of Primo's Food Store, 146 S. Richmond Road. The two men reportedly became "agitated" with the victim and began assaulting him.

A passing motorist witnessed the attack, called it in and Patrol Officer Robert Mancillas was dispatched to the scene at 5:19 p.m.

"He arrived at the scene in reference to a disturbance call," Evans said. "Ferrell was bleeding from the neck after having suffered multiple stab wounds."

Evans said the incident is still being looked into by the police.

"The two suspects fled on foot about the time it was being called in," Evans said. "The case is still under investigation."
