Brahmarettes win district finale
By JIM LEVESQUE sports@thefacts.com

DANBURY - East Bernard's girls basketball team beat Danbury 44-41 Friday night in the District 27-2A finale.

The Brahmarettes finished fifth in the district standings with a 8-6 record and were 14- 17 on the season.

"It was nice to finish up the season with a win," said EB coach Ronnie Schmidt.

"Our effort was excellent throughout the whole game and we were able to make the plays in the 4th quarter that proved to be the difference.

"It was a fun year and I especially want to thank my seniors, Paula Lopez, Ashley Segura, Roberta Pettit and Haley Dawson for their leadership this year.

District champion Hitchcock beat Van Vleck 77-50 to finish with a perfect 14-0 record and gets a first round bye in the playoffs.

Van Vleck slipped to 11-3 and Brazos has the same record after beating Yes College Prep 55-7.

They'll battle later in the week for playoff seedings.

Danbury slipped to 5-9 and tied with Boling for fifth place. The Lady Bulldogs picked up a 2-0- forfeit win over Houston Can Academy

Trailing 35-32, the EB opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to grab a six-point lead, then hold off a last-second Lady Panther try to tie the game.

Danbury was outscored 7-0 to start the game and trailed 124 after the first quarter.

The Lady Panthers battled back in the second frame, doubling the Brahmarettes 18-9, to take a 22-21 halftime lead on Chambless' layup off a Jennifer Mendez steal with one second to play.

The teams played tight throughout the third quarter.

Danbury built its biggest lead at four points, 29-25, with 4:19 to play in the frame. Over the final 3:28 of the third, the lead changed three times and the game was tied once.

East Bernard came out hot in the fourth quarter as four different players combined on a 9-0 run to give the Brahmarettes a 39-35 lead with 5:51 left in the game.

The lead grew to six points with 1:28 left when Florence Wilson scored on an offensive rebound to put East Bernard ahead, 43-37.

She finished with 10 points.

After a jumper by Chambless and a Brahmarettes free throw, Bailey Vrazel made a steal at halfcourt and layed it in to bring Danbury within three points, 44-41, with 22 seconds to play.

East Bernard turned the ball over, bringing it up court.

Danbury took over with 17 seconds left and scripted a play for a Chambless 3-pointer to tie.

Chambless curled around a group of players but was shadowed by a defender.

She received the pass, was forced to drive to the hoop and her scoop shot was partially blocked.

The loose ball was pounced on by players from both teams and the jump ball gave East Bernard possession with less than two seconds to play. Danbury fouled on the inbound pass.

Pettit hit the second of two free throws for the final fourpoint differential.

Dawson scored nine on three 3-pointers and Pettit chipped in with six points on two shots from behind the arc.
