Tigers need win to make playoffs

Wharton's boys basketball team needed a win over Sweeny Friday night at Tiger Gymnasium to secure the third and final District 24-3A playoff spot.

The Tigers beat Sealy 60-42 Tuesday night to improve to 8-4 in league play.

Sweeny and Stafford were both 10-1 and the Spartans played 3-9 Columbus last night. Fourth place Royal was 6-6 before playing 3-9 Sealy.

If the Tigers lost last night, they would have to beat the Falcons Tuesday to clinch.

Wharton jumped to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and went up 32-21.

Sealy came back to make it a 43-36 after the third quarter but Wharton widened the gap in the final eight minutes of the game.

Jordan Kirschke led the Tigers with 21 points.

Keemon Jones finished with 13 points.

Jonavan Jones added 10, Kenneth Phynon scored five, Odis Thompson added four and Louis Byars hit a free throw.

Wharton's junior varsity dropped a 55-54 decision to Sealy to slip to 7-5 in district play.

Elijah Richardson led the Tigers with 17 points.

Doug Ford finished with 13. T.T Johnson scored seven, Loyd Grissom added six, Bobby Browder scored five,.

Desmond Hearse, Dustin Lewis and Irvin Gomes scored two each.

Wharton' s freshman lost.
