EAST BERNARD - East Bernard running back Mike Hayes overcame injuries his junior and senior years to finish with a sensational career for the Brahmas.

Hayes, who was selected the Offensive Player-of-the -Year in Wharton County, signed to play at Blinn College in Brenham during a ceremony Friday morning in Brahma Gym.

"I'm real excited about it and it's close to home," said Hayes. "I also want to get my grades so I can transfer to a four-year school.

In addition to his local honors, Hayes was selected the District 27-2A Player-of-the-Year in Dave Campbell's winter magazine,

East Bernard Athletic Director and head football coach Jerry Long shared his views on Hayes fortune.

"It's a huge day for Mike, a huge day for his family and a huge day for the East Bernard family," said Long.

"I met Mike two years ago and he was a guy full of energy and has a lot of football potential.

Two years later here he sits. He's the perfect example of how hard work pays off."

"His work habits, his motivation - he pushed through that like nobody I've ever seen."

Blinn coach Brad Franchione was pleased with Hayes signing.

"He may be the most exciting of three running backs that we signed," said Franchione.
