Wharton girls crush Sealy 71-50 in district finale

District 24-3A girls champion Wharton will get a well-deserved break after beating Sealy 71-50 Tuesday night in Tiger Gym.
The Lady Tigers finished league play with a 13-1 record and improved to 19-4 on the season. With their district championship, Wharton gets a first round bye in the bi-district playoff round and will wait to play either Hardin Jefferson or Coldspring.
That match-up will be played Tuesday night at Barbers Hill High School in Mount Belvieu.
"We're going to stay with our regular routine and not do anything different," said Wharton coach Laura Guidry.
"We'll scrimmage with the boys a little and that will help."
The Lady Tigers area playoff game will be held next Thursday or Friday.
Wharton dominated Sealy from start to finish and jumped out to a 1610 first quarter lead.
Vernequa Taylor scored eight of her 16 points in the quarter. She also contributed with six assists. Desurae Matthews added five point in the quarter with a 3-pointer. Chandra Johnson also hit a trey.
Wharton opened the second quarter with a 11-0 run to go up 27-10 with 3:01 remaining. Sealy's Temple Taylor scored seven unanswered points to cut Wharton lead to 30-20 at halfitme
Jalessa Jones scored eight points in the quarter and Matthews and Taylor hit 3-pointers.
Sealy's Brittany Krchnak connected in the first minute of the third quarter to bring the score to 32-23, completing a 9-0 run.
Wharton answered with a 3-pointer by Johnson to make it 35-23 with 7:32 remaining.

Wharton went on a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter and led 59-36 at the 5:33 mark. Dogins connected with 3:03 remaining to put
Wharton up by 25 points, 67-42. Sealy outscored Wharton 8-3 in the remaining time.
Dogins finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jones scored 17 points, had four rebounds and six assists.
Desurae Matthews contributed with eight points and had five assists. Latoy Lavan and Chelbi Shavers had field goals.
Stafford beat Royal 43-38 to secure the second playoff spot to finish at 113. The Lady Spartans finished to third and is 10-4.
Columbia beat Sweeny 59-53 in a meaningless game to finish at 8-6. The Lady Bulldogs finished at 6-8.
Wharton's junior varsity dropped a 26-21 decsion to Sealy to finish with a 11-2 district record and a 14-6 season mark.
Robyn Mitchell led the Lady Tigers from Wharton County with eight points.
Melisa Phynon finished with six points. Sessily Grant added four, Sherman Kristen scored two and Karisha Byars and Tenechia Armstrong hit free throws.
