Nearly every family in America has been impacted by family members with cancer.

Hoping for a cure, local beauty salons in Wharton, Glen Flora and El Campo are hosting Cuts For Cancer events this weekend to raise funds for American Cancer Society research.

On Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., salons will be participating in the event with all proceeds going to ACS.

Wharton's location for Cuts For Cancer will be at Aurora's Beauty Salon on West Ahldag.

Aurora's Lydia Maldonado is coordinating the local event and is being joined by beauticians Estella Rojas, Sonia Galvan and Juanita Garza from Obsessions for the day. Gloria Jarvela will be doing facials and massages during the day.

All have been touched by cancer striking close to home. Maldonado's boyfriend's mom, Tina Ramirez, is now being treated for bladder cancer.

Rojas' mom just completed cancer treatments and her aunt is still battling the disease. Galvan's aunt died of cancer.

Even customer Martha Rodriguez, in the shop at the time, had a grandmother die of cancer.

Maldonado has been doing Cuts For Cancer for the past six years. She has seen participation dropping and wants to change that this year.

"I've got some things planned to attract more participants," Maldonado said. "I hope we can raise more funds this year. I would like to support ACS even more."

Maldonado has been planning and working on this year's event for months. She has scoured the area for prizes and last week had 21 given in support by local businesses.

"When a participant enters the door they will get a ticket," she said. "Then we will have drawings, dependent on how many prizes we wind up with. They local businesses have been great in supporting this event."

There will also be refreshments served at the shop and Maldonado is working on having a radio station broadcasting from the site.

"I want this to be a fun event for everyone while supporting a great cause," she said. "Cancer is not prejudiced - it strikes all ages, sexes and races."

To make an appointment for Sunday's event, give Maldonado at call at 532- 3121.

Also participating in Glen Flora is Michael's Barber and Styling. Call the shop for information at 677-3542.

El Campo shops include Hair Enterprises at 979-543-7757; Modern Salon of Beauty at 979-543-4311; and Rita's Hair Razors at 979-578-0333.

Remember that which ever salon is chosen, all the moneys generated during Sunday's event goes to the American Cancer Society.
