District lines shift as UIL makes 'wholesale' changes in realignment AUSTIN - The University Interscholastic League made wholesale changes with its biennial realignment which was released Friday morning. It affects all five schools in Wharton County which will be in different numbered districts. Wharton will be in a new 3A district, 26-3A, which is in Region IV with Royal, Needville, Stafford, Sweeny and Columbia. "We're in a six team district and it's better than an eight." said Wharton Athletic Director and head football coach Gary Van Sant. "There's always better odds of getting into the playoffs." Wharton is now in 24-3A which is in Region III, with Sweeny, Stafford, Royal, Needville, Columbia, Sealy and Columbus . Columbus and Sealy will now participate in 25-3A with Bellville, Giddings, La Grange and Smithville. "I was kind of of suprised that Royal didn't go with them too," said Van Sant. 28-3A includes Cuero, Goliad, Gonzales, Palacios, Yoakum and Edna, which moves up from 2A. Instead of eight districts in each region, there will only be seven in Class 3A. There is not a District 6 in Region I, there is not a District 15 in Region II, there is no District 23 in Region III and there is no District 30 in Region IV. Wharton's pre-district schedule includes games with Rice Consolidated, Smithville, Giddings and El Campo. Boling and East Bernard will be in different 2A districts. East Bernard will be in 26-2A with Rice Consolidated, Hallettsville, Hempstead, Schulenburg, Weimar and Brazos. Boling will compete in 29-2A with Danbury, Tidehaven, Hitchcock, Van Vleck and Industrial. "The only real surprise was Hempstead coming in," said EB Athletic Director and head football coach Jerry Long. "I really never thought about them." Long believes it will be a tough district. "We're where we need to be. We have to step up and compete with them. "It's going to be very competitive," said Long. "I count about six playoff teams in the district. "It's going to be a little tougher but that's where we trying to get. Every week is going to be pretty tough." He said competing in an odd team district didn't make any difference. "That doesn't hurt, it's just one less game that we have to find," said Long. The Brahmas and Bulldog will still play in a non-district game on Week 4. Boling plays Houston Christian in Week Zero on Aug. 29. The Bulldogs then play Weimar and Ganado. After the EB game Boling plays Louise. "There's not much that you can do. You get what they give you and go with it," said Boling Athletic Director and head football coach Neal Majewski. The Bulldogs competed in a similar district in 2001. Long and Majewski are searching for opponents Zero Weeks which is Aug. 29. In basketball, Boling and East Bernard won't have deal with any charter schools from Houston. Can Academy, Jesse Jackson, Milburn, Yes College Prep Northwest and Prep South East, will play in 24-2A. Louise will compete in new Class A district, 27-with Shiner, Flatonia and newcomers Burton and Ganado and Somerville, which moved down from 2A. El Campo will compte in new 4A district, 23-4A, with Bay City, Foster, Lamar Consolidated, Terry and newcomer Houston Stratford. The new enrollments for schools in Class A is 199 and below.
