Tigers hold on for big 47-46 win over Cards

COLUMBUS - Wharton's boys basketball team held on for a 47-46 win over Columbus in Tuesday's District 24-3A game in Cardinal Gymnasium.

Wharton jumped out to a 12-6 lead after the first quarter and went up 34- 13 at halftime.

The Cardinals outscored the Tigers 21-6 in the third quarter to make it a 40-34 game and 12-7 in the fourth quarter.

Jordan Kirschke led the Tigers with 21 points. K.C. Curtis finished with 10, Jonavan Jones added seven, Kenneth Phynon had five and Keemon Jones scored two.

Titus Johnson, Jamie Strauss and LaAdrian Waddle scored 11 each for Columbus.

The third place Tigers improved to 5-3 in the district standings and battled 1-7 Columbia Friday night.

League-leading Sweeny beat Royal 56-40 and was 8-0 before playing Stafford last night.

The Spartans were 7-1 after beating Needville 67-51.

The Jays were 3-5 before playing 3- 5 Sealy last night.

Coming Tuesday, Wharton hosts Needville.

Sweeny entertains Columbus, Royal hostes Columbia and Stafford plays at Sealy.

Tiger JV dealt loss

Wharton's junior varsity dropped a 39-36 decision to Columbus to fall to 5- 3 in district play.

Doug Ford led the Tigers with 13 points.

Elijah Richardson finished with nine. Bobby Browder added seven, T.T. Johnson scored three and Nathan Wilson and Loyd Grissom had two each
