Lady Tigers still own 24-3A lead

Wharton's girls basketball team kept it's District 24-3A lead after beating Columbus 63-48 Tuesday night in Tiger Gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers improved to 9-1 and played at Columbia, 7-3, Friday night.

"It was a very big win but wasn't easy," said Wharton coach Laura Guidry.

"We were a little bit worried at first because they kept slowing it down. That's not our game and we wanted to speed it up. It's very obvious that we have to run quick and hard."

Second place Stafford beat Needville to improve to 8-2 and played Sweeny, 5- 5, last night. Royal was 7-3 before playing Columbus, 3-7.

Columbus slowed down the pace to start the game and went up 14-13.

Wharton picked it up, outscoring Columbus 15-7 in the second quarter to go up 28-21 at halftime.

Lady Tiger Chandra Johnson hit two three-pointers in the first half and finished with 11 points.

Columbus' Elsie Huskey scored 10 points in the half and finished with 18.

The Lady Cardinals scored the first four points of the third quarter to make it 28-25.

Wharton responded with baskets by freshman Shaniqua Dogins and Vernequa Taylor to go up 32-25 with 5:11 remaining.

Dogins finished with 20 points and Taylor scored 13.

After Huskey connected to make it 32-27, Taylor nailed a trey with 4:26 showing on the clock.

Columbus' Brandy Huskey hit two baskets to make it a 35-31 game.

Dogins was fouled with 2:15 left and hit both free throws to bring the score to 37-31.

Desurae Matthews and Jalessa Jones picked up baskets to bring the score to 41-33 before the buzzer sounded.

Taylor's basket with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter put Wharton up 49-36. Johnson hit her third trey of the game with 4:31 to make it 52-38.

Columbus managed to cut the score to 10 points, 54-44 with 2:54 left but the Lady Tigers turned it up a notch.

Dogins hit a basket and was fouled, She hit the free throw to make it 57-44. The charity stripe shot gave Wharton shooters a nine of 11 effort.

"That's very unusual and good for us," said Guidry. "We usually don't shoot that well from the free throw line."

Columbus was 12 of 19 in the game.

Wharton outscored Columbus 6-4 in the remaining time.

Johnson also contributed with nine rebounds. Dogins finished with eight. Jones had 12 rebounds and four assists. Taylor had four assists.

Coming up Tuesday, Wharton plays at Needville. In other games, Columbus hosts Sweeny, Royal entertains Columbia and Stafford plays at Sealy.

The Lady Tigers host Stafford next Friday before entertaining Sealy in the league finale on Feb. 6.

"Stafford is the one that scares me the most," said Guidry.

Wharton's junior varsity beat Columbus 51-34 to improve to 9-1 in District 24-3A play and to 13-4 on the season. with 14 points.

Brionna Farr and Chelbi Shavers scored eight points each.

Melisa Phynon and Robyn Mitchell scored seven each and Sherman Kristen added three.

Karisha Byars pulled down five rebounds and Mitchell and Farr added five each.
