Superintendent applicants will be questioned by school board

During a special workshop session held this week, Wharton school trustees assembled a preliminary set of questions covering a list of 13 topics for use during interviews to hire a new school superintendent.

Board President Don Erdelt provided a list of guidelines and questions to the Journal-Spectator.

Erdelt said the district's trustees are still interested in receiving input from the community on what they would like the board to look for in superintendent candidates.

During the interviews, board members will be asking the questions on a rotating basis involving every board member.

When necessary, "follow up questions or questions designed to elicit a more comprehensive response" can be asked with the board then returning to the rotation. Other information categories, along with sample questions, include:

Finance

The applicant will discuss budgeting codes, establishing/ setting tax rates, bonds, etc.

• Describe your experience with the budgeting process.

• How familiar are you with the TEA budget coding process?

• Describe your experience with bond and capital project programs.

• What is your experience with writing and/or overseeing state or federal grants?

Community involvement

How would the applicant be involved in the community?

• What strategies would you use to involve all segments of the community in the schools?

• In what ways do you perceive that you will be accessible to parents, community and staff?

Personnel issues

How would the applicant handle personnel issues including philosophy of administration, attitude toward collaborative decision making and what would be expected of the board in personnel matters?

• Describe your management style and what methods have you found to be effective in supervising administrators.

• What will be your top priorities in administering an excellent school district?

• In the past, how have you rewarded staff members who have done an excellent job?

• Describe effective delegation and how would you delegate?

The applicant should explain why he/she is interested in WISD and why WISD should be interested in the candidate.

Commitment

How long will the applicant be willing to commit to the community and to the position and what makes the applicant the right choice for the position?

NCLB

Questions relating to the theory and practice regarding No Child Left Behind.

• NCLB requires that 100 percent of all students pass the state assessment by the year 2013- 2014. What would be your strategy to ensure that student achievement be raised to this level?

Auxiliary Services

What are the applicant's experiences in operations, such as construction, maintenance, transportation and food services?

Curriculum

Explore he applicant's experiences with curriculum issues and discuss academic program.
