Tigers suffer second straight district setback

BROOKSHIRE - Wharton's boys basketball team dropped its second straight District 24-3A game losing to Royal 47-40 Friday night in Falcon Gymnasium.

Wharton lost to Sweeny last Tuesday after beating Sealy on Jan. 11.

The third place Tigers slipped to 4- 3 and played 2-5 Columbus Tuesday night.

League-leading Sweeny beat Needville 61-56 to improve to 7-0 and played the 3-4 Falcons. Second place Stafford was 6-1 before playing the 3-4 Bluejays.

Royal built a 26-18 halftime lead as a late Wharton rally fell short.

Jordan Kirschke led the Tigers with 11 points. K.C. Curtis contributed with 10.

Kenneth Phynon added eight. Odis Thompson finished with seven and Jonavon Jones scored four.

Wharton's junior varsity beat Royal 70-21 to improve to 5-2 in district play.

Lloyd Grissom led the Tigers with 12 points. Ashton Washington added 10, T.T. Johnson scored eight.

Elijah Richardson added six, Marcus Melton and Luther Lathon scored five each and Bobby Browder and Desmond Hearse scored four each.
