Lady Tigers maintain 24-3A basketball lead
Wharton beats Royal 49-37

Wharton's girls basketball team remained in the District 24-3A lead after beating Royal 49-37 Friday night in Tiger Gym.

The Lady Tigers improved to 8-1 and played Columbus, which was 3-6, Tuesday night. Now second place Stafford upset Columbia, improved to 7-2 and played 1-8 Needville last night.

The Lady Necks slipped to 6-3 and played winless Sealy. Royal was 6-3 before playing Sweeny, which was 5-4.

Wharton jumped out to a 10-6 lead after the first quarter and went up 22- 10 at halftime.

Both teams scored six points in the third quarter and Wharton outscored Royal 21-17 in the final eight minutes of the game to win by 12.

Jalessa Jones and Shaniqua Dogins scored 16 points for the Lady Tigers.

Jones also has nine rebounds and four assists and Dogins added eight rebounds.

Vernequa Taylor finished with 12 points. Chandra Johnson added five and Latoy Lavan hit a free throw.

Coming up Friday, Wharton plays at Columbia. Sweeny hosts Stafford, Sealy entertains Needville and Royal hosts Columbus.

Lady Tiger JV wins again

Wharton's junior varsity beat Royal 42-31 to improve to 8-1 in district and to 12-4 on the season.

Chelbi Shavers led the Lady Tigers with 26 points and also had eight rebounds and two assists.

Robyn Mitchell finished with eight points, Sessly Grant added four and Kencheira Phynon scored two.
