Lady Tigers maintain 24-3A basketball lead
Wharton beats Royal 49-37
      Wharton's girls basketball team remained in the District 24-3A lead after beating Royal 49-37 Friday night in Tiger Gym. Tigers suffer second straight district setback
      BROOKSHIRE - Wharton's boys basketball team dropped its second straight District 24-3A game losing to Royal 47-40 Friday night in Falcon Gymnasium. Wharton lost to Sweeny last Tuesday after beating Sealy on Jan. 11. The third place Tigers slipped to 4- 3 and played 2-5 Columbus Tuesday night.

Softball teams start practice
      Wharton County's five high school softball teams started practice on Monday. Wharton, under coach Shauna Eller, scrimmages Lamar Consolidated next Tuesday in Rosenberg. The Lady Tigers will then scrimmage St. Joseph in Victoria on Feb. 1 and hosts Bay City on Feb. 5.

Wharton swimmers head to 24-3A meet on Saturday
      Wharton's boys and girls swim teams will compete in their most important meet of the year this Saturday at the District 25-4A Championships at the El Campo Aquatic Center. The Wharton girls are the defending district champion and the boys team finished third last year.

      EAST BERNARD - East Bernard's girls basketball team stayed in contention for one of the three District 27-2A playoff spots after beating Houston Can Academy 76-16 Friday night in Brahma Gym. The fourth place Brahmarettes improved to 6-3 and played second place Van Vleck Tuesday night.

Bulldogs dealt loss by Brazos
      WALLIS - Boling's boys basketball team came out on the short end of a 55-50 score to Brazos Friday night in Cougar Gym. Poor free throw shooting proved costly for the Bulldogs as the team was eight of 19 from the charity stripe. Brazos was 16 of 29.

Hayes receives top 27-2A player honors
      EAST BERNARD- East Bernard senior Mike Hayes was selected the District 27-2A Player of The Year in Dave Campbell's Winter Magazine which was released last week. Hayes scored 20 touchdowns and rushed for over 1,400 to help lead the Brahmas to two playoff wins.
