Lady Tigers total team effort takes down Sweeny

One "Miss Outside" and three "Miss Insides" allowed the Wharton Lady Tigers to dominate Sweeny for a 61-42 District 24-3A win Tuesday night at Tiger Gym.
Vernequa Taylor was hot from the outside as she scored a game high 18 points and dished out four assists as Wharton improved to 7-1 in district and 13-4 overall.
Helping to keep the home team at the top of the standings with strong interior play were Shaniqua Dogins, Jalessa Jones and Chandra Johnson. Dogins pumped in 16 points and grabbed nine boards. Jones hit for a dozen points and pulled in nine caroms while Johnson scored 10 and cleaned the glass eight times.
Desurae Matthews contributed three points and four assist, Latoy Lavan two points while Damacia Williams also put in floor time. As a team, the Lady Tigers were 10-14 from the charity stripe while Sweeny only made two of six.
Trailing 11-10 after a quarter, Wharton turned it around with a 28-7 second for a 38-18 intermission lead. Wharton then extended their lead with a 12-7 third and then coasted home as Sweeny took the final frame 15-11.
Tigers were home last night as they took on Royal trying to avenge their only first round loss. They will be in Tiger Gym again on Tuesday hosting Columbus.
In Friday's other 24-3A games, Needville was at Sweeny, Columbia at Stafford and Sealy at Columbus, results not available. Tuesday's schedule includes Royal at Sweeny, Sealy at Columbia and Needville at Stafford.
The Lady Tiger JV was led by triple threat Chelbi Shavers as they downed Sweeny 46-27 Tuesday night.
Shavers had a game high 20 points, a team high five rebound and three assists in the game. Additional double-digit scoring was provided by Kencheria Phynon, 11 and Brianna Farr, 10. Farr also chipped in three assists. Robyn Mitchell added six points while Karisha Byars, Melisa Phynon and Sessley Grant saw floor time.
With the win, the junior Lady Tigers were 7-1 in district and 11-4 going into last night's contest with Royal.
