Elementary students stay busy this season, BHS holds elections

Newgulf Elementary School has been a busy place lately. The First grade had a great time performing the "12 Dogs of Christmas" at the Christmas program. They also enjoyed the rest of the program, especially the "10 Lords a Leaping" featuring Gerald Floyd. The parents once again did a wonderful job preparing for the Christmas parties held in each class. On Dec. 14 the Fourth Grade class put on two great performances of "Santa's Stuck in the 50s." It was a hit! Fifth Graders are preparing for their program on Jan. 25.

Iago Junior High students are working extremely hard on UIL events. Speaking events will be held at Iago on Jan. 31 from 4 to 8 p.m. All other events will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at YES College Prep Southeast in Houston. Good luck to all participants! The Iago Junior High Speech Club recently had officer elections with the following results: Savannah Metting, president; Abby Herndon, vice-president; Emma Sparkman, secretary; and Sydney Zahradnik, historian.

The Boling High School Band had a full schedule during December with Region Band auditions, the Christmas Concert, the Boling Christmas Parade and Band Caroling. On Jan. 5, senior percussionist

Cristina Hinojosa competed in the Area Band auditions and placed fourth. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments! The band is currently preparing for the UIL Solo and Ensemble contest scheduled for Feb. 1, and UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest which will be on March 12.

On Jan. 8 the BHS Student Council presented the Boling ISD School Board members with certificates of appreciation and shirts in honor of Board Recognition Month.

BHS students are also very busy preparing for their upcoming UIL academic meet. During the next month students will be participating in various academic invitational meets while rehearsals for the One Act Play production of "Pygmalion" by Bernard Shaw are underway.

The One Act Play sponsor is Stephanie Konvicka. The speech team and sponsor Linda Alderson are preparing for several upcoming tournaments.

Don't forget the BHS Student Council will be collecting paper goods during the month of January for the DAR's January White Give. Anyone wanting to donate to this may contact student council sponsor

Patti Hubenak at 657-2506. The drive will run until Jan. 30. Items needed include paper plates, cups, paper towels and toilet paper.

BHS Students need to remember to vote for Class Favorites next Thursday.

Don't forget: Faith Christian Academy will host its annual Barbecue Chicken Fundraiser Dinner at the KC Hall in Wharton next Saturday, Jan. 26. Dinner and raffle tickets are still available. Dinner tickets are $10 each or a table for $70. Raffle Tickets are $20 each or six for $100. Tickets can be purchased from Faith Christian Office, any student, staff or board members. For information, call the school office at 531-1000. Proceeds from this event will help with Phase II construction renovations, playground additions, and other operating expenses.

In addition, the school is seeking support for its scholarship fund. It has students in need of financial assistance and need your support. For information about the program or would like to contribute in any way, call the office at 531- 1000.

I would like to praise the student-athletes at Iago Junior High for their care and compassion during the horrible incident which took place at Hitchcock last Monday evening. We are all very proud of your conduct and the way you handled the situation.

A personal thank you to everyone for their encouragement and support as I participated in the Chevron Houston Marathon last Sunday. Extra special thanks and love go to Katie Womack, Jamie Womack, Sharon Schafer, Larry Womack, Keith Ermis, Amy Ermis, Kayci Ermis, Kelli Ermis and Cade Radley for being my support teams. Another special note of thanks goes to Dr. Brian Zale, Laura Rios and Thelma Rios at the Fort Bend Foot Center in Rosenberg for helping me get ready to run.

Condolences to Wharton Journal-Spectator Sports Writer Mike Konvicka and his family in the loss of Mike's father this past week. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time.
