Lady Tigers own 24-3A lead SEALY - Wharton's girls basketball team took sole possession of the District 24-3A after beating Sealy 76-38 Tuesday night in Tiger Gymansium. Wharton improve to 6-1 and played 4-3 Sweeny last night. The Lady Bulldogs upset Columbia 35-33. The Lady Necks slipped to 5-2 and played Needville which had a 1-6 record. Stafford beat Royal 33-29 to improve to 5-2 and played winless Sealy. The Lady Spartans were 5-2 before playing Columbus which owned a 5-2 mark. Wharton got off to a fast start and went up 22-2 after the first quarter. The Lady Tigers from Wharton County led 34-8 at halftime and 47-24 at the end of the third quarter. Wharton added 29 points in the final eight minutes of the game and Sealy scored 12. Vernequa Taylor led the Lady Tigers with 25 points and also had three assists. Jalessa Jones finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Shaniqua Dogins finished with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Chandra Jones added eight points, Damica Williams added four points and Latoy Lavon scored two. Coming up Friday, Wharton hosts Royal. Sweeny entertains Needville, Stafford hosts Columbia and Sealy plays at Columbus. Lady Tiger JV loses Wharton's junior varsity dropped a 42-39 decision to Sealy to slip to 6-1 in District 24-3A play and to 10-4 on the season. Wharton fell behind 6-2 after the first quarter and trailed 14-10 at halftime. The Lady Tigers rallied back to take a 22-19 lead after the first quarter but Sealy battled back to win it in the fourth. Kencheria Phynon led Wharton with 23 points and also pulled down nine rebounds. Melisa Phynon finished with eight poitns. Brianna Farr added four points.
