Tigers upend Sealy 68-53 -Wharton stayed in the thick of the boys District 24-3A race by setting the tempo against the Sealy on their way to a solid 68-53 win Friday night at Tiger Gym. The win boosted the Tigers record to 4-1 in district and 13-9 overall and left them tied with Stafford for second in the league standings behind Sweeny, 5-0. Wharton played at Sweeny last night for the top of the district standings while Stafford was home against Columbus (1-4). Friday night, Wharton plays its second straight road contest at Royal starting at 7:30 p.m. Wharton started taking control of the contest midway through the second quarter with their best scoring run of the night. Up by one 23-22 with 4:09 to go tothe intermission, The Tigers went on a 14-4 run over the next three minutes. Kenneth Phynon got the run started by hitting a pair of free throws followed by Shelley Lewis and Phynon dropping back to back treys on Sealy. Jonavon Jones and Odis Thompson also scored during the run. After Sealy rallied late to cut the lead to 40-32 at the half, Wharton turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter. After Sealy scored on two of its first three possessions of the half, the Tigers then forced six consecutive turnovers while scoring eight points during the run, six by Jonavon Jones. Leading by a dozen, 56-44, going into the fourth quarter, Wharton would match each Tiger score during the stretch before putting the lamps on and holding Sealy scoreless for the fi- nal 1:40 of the game to close things out with the 15-point win. Jonavon Jones led the team with 15 points while Thompson hit for 14 and Phynon scored a dozen. K.C. Curtis and Jordan Kirschke finished with eight and six for the starting five, respectively. Coming off the bench, Keemon Jones chipped in with eight, Louis Byars finished with four; Lewis, three; and Julian Waddy, one. After the game, head coach Mike Majors was ready to brag on his team's performance - in the classroom. "We didn't lose a single player to grades at the varsity or JV level," he said. "That's a big plus for us when it comes to district play being able to keep the team together." 24-3A Boys Standings
