The 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration gets going the weekend of Jan. 19 and 20. A parade will be held Jan. 19 starting at 9:30 a.m. from downtown Wharton at the square to Dawson Elementary School Gymnasium. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial celebration begins at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Mother Zion Baptist Church on Milam Street. Guest speaker is Rev. E.L. Dawson, pastor of Progressive Baptist Church in El Campo. Each Church is asked to donate $150 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund. The theme is Marching From Dream to Reality. On this coming Monday the children will be out of school for the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday recognition. Dr. King was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. King was the leading organizer of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. During this period African Americans received voting rights, and an end to legal employment discrimination and segregation of public facilities took place. Dr. King believed in having non-violent demonstrations and marches for equal rights and in 1964 Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1968 Dr. King was working to organize a multiracial poor people's campaign to march on Washington, D.C., to secure basic economic rights for them. A demonstration was planned for that spring, but before it could happen Dr. King was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4. A famous quote from Dr. King is, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
