Junior high girl dies after collapsing on court during basketball game with Iago

HITCHCOCK - A Hitchcock middle school basketball player died Monday after collapsing during a game with Iago - despite the efforts of the opposing team's coach to save her life.

Kaylan Boclair, 13, collapsed on the court at Crosby Middle School at about 6 p.m., with about one minute left in the game.

School officials used a defibrillator to try to save Boclair and Iago coach Judy Womack gave her CPR.

A Hitchcock school board member who is also a paramedic was at the game and treated the student as much as he could until an ambulance arrived.

BISD Superintendent Charles Butcher shared his views on Womack's deed.

"I think that she was fantastic," said Butcher.

"We train and hope we never use those (defibrillators) and the training. It's nice to know that the people there are involved and can step forward and do what needs to be done."

Boling has five defibrillators in each of its schools. Assistant Superintendent Wade Stidevent also praised Womack for her efforts.

"We're very proud that she took an assertive role there in the time of crisis," said Stidevent.

Bonclair was rushed to Mainland Hospital in Galveston, where she died at about 7:30 p.m.

All 14 of Boling's coaches are trained to use the defibrillator, which is available for sporting events at home or on the road.

"They take CPR and defibrillator classes and get certified each August," Stidevent said.

"Even though we were the visitors, we had our own defibrillator there with us," Butcher said.
