Lady Tigers win overtime contest
Three teams tied for District 24-3A lead

STAFFORD - Wharton's girls basketball is now in a three-way tie for the District 24-3A lead.

The Lady Tigers beat Stafford 61-56 in overtime Tuesday night to improve to 5-1 league play.

Down 51-48 with 20 seconds left in the game, Jalessa Jones caught a pass from Vernequa Taylor nailed a three to tie the score.

"Stafford had just scored and we were taking the ball," Wharton coach Laura Guidry said. "It was passed to Vernequa who sped down the court where all the other players were in position to shoot a three. The ball was passed to Jalessa with just a few seconds and she hit it."

In the overtime, Shaniqua Dogins fouled out and was later followed by Taylor. Damaica Williams and Latoy Lavan came in and contributed with controlling the game in the last 2:00 minutes.

"In overtime, we applied pressure every time they took the ball out and managed to steal it a few times," said Guidry.

Royal held on for a 25-19 win over Needville to own the same record and Columbia bested Columbus 45-31 to improve to 5-1.

Wharton played at winless Sealy on Friday and visits Sweeny on Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs were 3-3 before playing the Lady Necks last night.

Royal hosted Stafford, which was 4-2.

Columbus and Needville were 1-5 before playing.

In Tuesday's game, Stafford jumped out to a 11-9 lead after the first quarter but Wharton rallied back to go up 24- 18 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers then built a 35-26 lead after the third quarter but the Lady Spartans rallied back to tie the game 51-51 after regulation.

Wharton picked up seven points in the 4-minute overtime and Stafford scored three.

Jalessa Jones led the Lady Tigers scoring attack with 16 points. She also pulled down six rebounds and had three assists. Taylor and Chandra Jones scored 11 points each. Taylor also had five rebounds.

Dogins contributed with eight points and 16 rebounds. Williams scored six points. Desurae Matthews added four points and two assists.

Wharton JV wins again

Wharton's junior varsity improved to 6-0 in district play and to 10-3 on the season with a 43-40 win over Stafford.

Chelbi Shavers led the Lady Tigers with 17 points and had three assists.

Kencheria Phynon finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Robyn Mitchell scored six points and added five rebounds. Sessily Grant and Melisa Phynon scored four points each.
