Lady Tigers win St. Joe tourney
Wharton beat Hallettsville Sacred Heart 74-33 in a first round game last Thursday. The Lady Tigers then beat county rival El Campo 59-30 in a second round game on Friday. Wharton's Vernequa Taylor, who totaled up 31 points in the win over Industrial, was selected the tournament's Most-Valuable Player. She scored 38 in all three games. She also had six rebounds against Industrial, Jalessa Jones and Shaniqua Dogins were selected to the all-tournament team. Dogins finished with 12 points in the win over the Cobraettes. She also pulled down eight rebounds. and had four assists. Jalessa Jones finished with four points. Latoy Lavan and Desurae Matthews hit free throws. Matthews also had four assists Chandra Johnson contributed with five rebounds and Lavan added four. Wharton resumed its District 24-3A schedule on Friday and was 3-1 before playing Needville who was 1-3. Leauge-leading Royal was 4-0 before playing Columbia who was 3-1. Stafford was 3-1 before playing 0-4 Sealy. Sweeny was 1-3 before playing Columbus who was 1-3. Coming on Jan. 8, Wharton plays at Stafford, Sweeny hosts Sealy, Royal entertains Needville and Columbus plays 24-3A Girls Standings
