Tigers top tourney host Bay City BAY CITY - The Wharton Tigers weren't very good guests in the eyes of the home fans Friday as they collected a pair of wins at the Don Davis Eddie Nelson Holiday Invitational, including edging host Bay City in a game going down to the wire. Against the BlackCats, the Tigers carved out a 27-25 halftime lead on their way to a 50- 42 win. Three of the Tigers hit for double figures to provide the bulk of the Wharton scoring punch. Jordan Kirschke finished with a game high 19 points while Jonovan Jones and Kenneth Phynon each scored 10. In their second game of the tourney, Wharton downed Columbia 59-43. The Tigers established themselves in the first half of the contest by going up 33-16. Kirschke again led the scoring parade with 16 points. Odis Thompson and Kennon Jones both added nine points while Phynon finished with eight. Following the tourney, which concludes on Saturday, the Tigers will back in action with a District 24-3A road game against Needville on Jan. 4. Around the area, the Boling Bulldogs dropped a 72-39 decision to the Ganado Indians in Thursday action at the Hallettsville Round Robin Tournament. Dennis Hemphill hit for 24 while Thomas Felder scored 14 in the loss. The Bulldogs played Edna and Hallettsville on Friday. Today's tournament game pits Boling against Yorktown starting at 12:05 p.m. |
