Lady Tigers whip Columbus
Wharton owns 2-1 District 24-3A record

The Lady Tigers entered Tuesday's home game against Columbia with a 2-1 District 24-3A record. Wharton returns to action after the Christmas holiday and plays in the Victoria St. Josepth Tournament Dec. 27-29.
COLUMBUS - The Wharton Lady Tigers improved to 2-1 in the District 24-3A standings, and 6-5 overall, after beating Columbus 64-39 Friday night in Cardinal Gymnasium.

Wharton played at Columbia, which beat Sealy 76-54, on Tuesday. The Lady Necks were 2-0.

Royal beat Sweeny 37-22 and was 3- 0 before playing Columbus last night. Stafford was 2-1 after beating Needville and played Sweeny last night.

Wharton jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter and went up 34- 21 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Cardinals 16-5 in the third quarter to go up 50-26 and finished things off with a 15-13 fourth quarter.

Vernequa Taylor scored a season high of 28 points. She also had six assists.

Shaniqua Dogins finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Chandra Johnson scored 10 points and grabbed 10 caroms. Damacia Williams scored six points.

Jalessa Jones scored four points and had five rebounds and five assists. Desurae Matthews added seven rebounds and Chandra Johnson had two assists.

The Lady Tigers have an open date on Friday and returns to action after the Christmas holidays to play in the St. Joseph Invitational Tournament Dec. 27-29.

District play resumes on Jan. 4 and Wharton plays at rival Needville.

Lady Tiger JV wins

Wharton's junior varsity beat Columbus 29-19 to improve to 3-0 in district play and to 7-3 on the season.

Chelbi Shavers scored 10 points and had seven rebounds and three assists.

Brianna Farr finished with eight points and five rebounds. Sessly Grant scored five points. Robyn Mitchell had seven rebounds and Karisha Byes had eight.
