Tigers win 24-3A basketball opener

Wharton's boys basketball team beat Columbus 63-52 in Friday's District 24- 3A opener at Tiger Gymansium.
The Tigers played Columbia,which lost to Sealy, Tuesday night. Wharton entered the game with a 6-5 season record.
Sweeny beat Royal 51-34 and played Stafford last night. The Spartans beat Needville 53-40. The Bluejays played Sealy.
Wharton jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter but Columbus rallied to close the gap to 29-23 at halftime.
The Cardinals outscored the Tigers 20-19 in the third quarter to make it 48-42
Wharton scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and Sealy had 10.
Odis Thompson led the Tigers with 16 points.
Jordan Kirschke finished with 15 and Keemon Jones scored 12 to finish in double figures. K.C. Curtis added seven, Kenneth Phyon added six. Ronard Jackson had three and Louis Byars and Jonavan Jones scored two each.
La Adrian Waddle led the Cardinals with 27 points and Stephen Appelt finished with 10.
Wharton visits Bellville in a nondistrict game on Friday before taking off for the Christmas holidays.
Wharton's freshman boys basketball team beat Columbus 53-33 in Friday's District 24-3A opener at Tiger Gymnasium.
The team is now 1-0 in district and 6-3 on the season.
Lamar Lathon led the Tigers with 25 points,
Ken Lowery finished with 12. Ashton Washington scored seven, Kasey Segura added five and Kendall Curtis had four.
