James Somers

James "Jimmy" Somers, age 71 of Boling passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 at his home. He was born on Nov. 5, 1936 in Newgulf, the son of the late Robert Fulton Somers and Ora Lee Hart Somers.

Mr. Somers was a lifelong resident of the Boling area and a member of College Heights Baptist Church. He married Barbara Vandegrift on July 20, 1956 in Iago. Mr. Somers worked as a plant supervisor for Texas Gulf Sulfur for 35 years before his retirement in 1996. He was a great athlete during his youth. He won state in shot put and discus and played for the Wharton County Junior College football team.

He was a hard worker who loved golfing, fishing, and woodworking.

Mr. Somers loved meeting up with the boys every morning at the "Coffee Shop." He was a very generous man with his time, talent and treasure.

Visitation was held on Thursday Dec. 13, 2007 at Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2007 at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hurley officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Somers of Boling; daughters, Elizabeth Richardson and husband Jack, Gay Joines and husband Gary, all of Boling, Amanda Somers of Richmond; son, Ross Somers of Houston; and sister Bobbie Lee Mainer of Dickinson; grandchildren, Marci Macha and husband Allen, David Lee Joines and wife Tracee, Keith Richardson, Mary Jo, Richardson, and Jack Richardson; Jr.; great-grandchildren, Joseph Richardson and Abbi and Graci Joines.

Pallbearers were Burlis Bickham, Bobby Sterry, Lyle Burns, James Andersen, Jerry Davidek, DeVoy Shaw.

Honorary Pallbearers were Nancy Anderson, Joe Bentley, Gene Statton, Mack Hill, the Coffee Shop Boys and the Texas Gulf Sulfur Maintenance Department retirees.

If desiring, memorials may be made to either College Heights Baptist Church, 1515 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488; Hospice Support Inc., P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, TX 77437; or to a charity of personal choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
