Lady Tigers start playing for keeps

SWEENY - Wharton's girls basketball team played undefeated Sweeny Tuesday night in the District 24-3A opener in Bulldog Gymnasium.
The Lady Tigers owned a 2-3 record and the Lady Bulldogs were 6-0.
Wharton beat Hempstead and Bay City to start the season but then lost to the Lady Cats, and Navasota and Brenham.
Junior Vernequa Taylor entered the game averaging 21.2 points per game and Lady Bulldog Ashley Bonner was averaging 13.3 points per game.
Jalessa Jones was averaging 10 points per game and freshman Shaniqua Dogins was averaging 9.2 points per game.
Royal hosted Sealy, Needville played at Columbia and Columbus took on Stafford in the other three district games.
Friday is an open date on the district schedule and league play resumes on Dec. 11.
The Lady Tigers play Royal in Brookshire. Needville hosts rival Sweeny, Sealy entertains Columbia and Stafford plays at Columbia.
